E mi ripeto una parola all’infinito nell’intima coscienza
Lo so, piangerò!
Mi farò del male lo so!
Ma pregherò,
e pensando a Dio ce la farò!
Mi farò del male lo so!
Lo so, piangerò!
Ti sei domandato come reagirò?
Come sopravvivrò alla totale distruzione dei sogni
e degli ideali in tutti questi anni inseguiti,
invocati, cercati, costruiti?
“Dove ti sei nascosto Dio?”
“Dove ti sei nascosto Dio?”
Mi farò del male lo so!
Avrò graffi superficiali e profondi da curare,
avrò spine e schegge nelle carni da levare.
Lo so, piangerò!
Mi farò del male lo so!
Ma pregherò,
e pensando a Dio ce la farò!
Mi farò del male lo so!
Lo so, piangerò!
all’atto distruttivo della rassegnazione
relegando talenti a vivere come naufraghi
inghiottiti dai mille paradisi artificiali.
Mi farò del male lo so!
Avrò graffi superficiali e profondi da curare,
avrò spine e schegge nelle carni da levare.
Lo so, piangerò!
Mi farò del male lo so!
Ma pregherò,

I’ll make it!
I reach out for you beside me, but you aren’t there,
and yet you manage to guide my awakening.
If you were here, you'd tell me I've lifted my legs from the ground
and set them on a path made of trails
that lead nowhere, where every step is dizzying
before the depths of my solitude.
With a rasping voice you would remind me
that the enthusiasm of this dream
has limited my abilities,
causing me to overlook the description of a truth
that explains a world too distracted by selfishness
to pay attention to the content of an old expression,
forced to experience its shipwreck in the aseptic sky of ancestral truths.
And I repeat a word endlessly in my innermost consciousness
to listen to its dull sound as it presents itself and repeats itself:
Love, Love, Love, like a chant
that I don't want to hear, while I prefer to listen to you
who whisper to me not to give importance to the images of dreams,
to rest the gaze of reason on the table of contemporary reality
to glimpse what it is covered with,
but you don't realize what you force me to look at.
Human misery has revealed itself to my eyes,
advancing bleakly to the very threshold of my heart;
it brings breadcrumbs to my lips,
reminding me that I am poorer and hungrier than the entire world.
Tell me, is this what you want from me?
Do you want me to sit at this meager table,
hungry as an entire people,
and satisfy that hunger by swallowing nothing but crumbs?
I’ll end up hurting myself—I know it! I will have shallow and deep scratches to tend to,
I will have thorns and splinters in my flesh to remove.
I know, I will weep!
I know I will hurt myself!
But I will pray,
and by thinking of God, I will make it through!
I know I will hurt myself!
I know, I will weep!
But I will pray,
and by thinking of God, I will make it through!
The hunger that grips my insides is so great
that I am disheartened by the poverty of this table
robbed of its finest dishes, stained and scarred
by previous bivouacs, a weary witness to a well-worn banquet,
where the feeling of altruistic love
has been torn to pieces by the inhuman selfishness of the world community.
And after a bleak, real,
yet cruel depiction of the human present,
have you asked yourself what I will do?
Have you wondered how I will react?
How I will survive the total destruction of the dreams
and ideals pursued,
invoked, sought, and built over all these years?
And after a painful, true, and bitter discovery—
one that drowns me in a stormy sea of ??questions
with no one to ask—
have you considered how I will go on living
the time that remains, bereft of the consolation
and the joy of dreaming, of hoping, of loving?
My anguish for the world and all its people
does not distract me from the one question:
“Where have You hidden, God?”
“Where have You hidden, God?”
I know I will hurt myself!
I will have shallow and deep scratches to tend to,
I will have thorns and splinters in my flesh to remove.
I know, I will weep! I know I’ll hurt myself!
But I will pray,
and by thinking of God, I’ll make it through!
I know I’ll hurt myself!
I know, I’ll weep!
But I will pray,
and by thinking of God, I’ll make it through!
You took away the meaning of a word,
of a feeling, of a cherished bond, of a hope, of a dream,
of companionship, of a medicine, of a blanket, of an ideal.
You know that from this moment on, I will torment the soul of humanity,
searching through all the ages of this world for the precise instant
when the collective hand tore away the handkerchiefs
meant to dry the ocean of tears
of which it was witness, victim, and executioner?
But I will not succumb
to the destructive act of resignation
to which humanity forces me by exiling my soul.
I will nurture it at the table
of careful, contemplative searching;
with tireless will,
I will guide every step toward that lost feeling,
and I will find it—I will free it from the captivity suffocating it
within the cramped house of solitude,
forcing men and hearts to inhabit the micro-islands of micro-worlds,
relegating talents to live like castaways
swallowed by a thousand artificial paradises.
I know I’ll hurt myself!
I’ll have shallow and deep scratches to heal,
thorns and splinters in my flesh to remove.
I know, I’ll weep!
I know I’ll hurt myself!
But I will pray,
and by thinking of God, I’ll make it through!
